DISCHARGEMENT OF ZAKAT AL-FITR ON THE DAY OF ‘EID AFTER THE PRAYER A HADEETH AND JURISPRUDENTIAL STUDY

ABSTRACT

This research collects and analyzes the hadiths reported concerning the necessity of dischargement of zakat al-fitr before the ‘Eid prayer and aims at clarifying their level of authenticity or weakness. A critical inductive and deductive approach has been followed. The research concluded that there are two hadiths reported on this issue and neither of them indicates that which would prevent the dischargement of zakat al-fitr after the ‘Eid prayer. As a matter of fact, one of the hadiths, the hadith of ibn ‘Omar, is understood as meaning that it is mustahabb (recommended). The second, the hadeeth of ibn ‘Abbas, is a mawqoof report (traced back to the Companion, not the Prophet-sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) according to the preponderant opinion and there is doubt concerning its authenticity; what is meant by it is a decrease in reward for the one who discharges it after the prayer.

Key words: charity from among charities, time of zakat al-fitr
