PAPYRUS AND ITS IMPORTANCE IN THE TRACING OF EARLY MODERN WORKS THE BOOK "THE WHOLE IN THE HADITH" BY IBN WAHAB IS A MODEL

Papyrology is one of the most important branches of manuscript studies (in addition to codicology and diplomatics). This is because writing on papyrus is an ancient practice that was being used in ancient Egypt and other parts of the world, even until the early Muslim conquests. Very specific methods were followed in order to prepare and print on papyrus, depending on their intended purpose, and the printing was performed using red or black ink.

Papyrus manuscripts can be classified into multiple branches – scientific, literary, political, and personal. Moreover, the study of papyrology gained more attention, particularly, after the advancement of deciphering ancient texts by specialized scientists. Not only are these scientists experts in interpreting ancient texts, but they also are capable of utilizing modern instruments that help them determine the authenticity of each piece as well as measure its approximate age. These advancements are of great importance because they document life events that occurred during the ancient times. They also provide vital information in all fields of study that can benefit us nowadays – jurisdiction, politics, administration, social science, economy, and others.

The study of Arabic papyrology is still in its early development stages. This is because only a small portion out of hundreds of thousands of reported papyrus pieces has been found. One of these pieces that has been found is the book of “Al-Jami’ Fi Al-Hadith”, by the Imam Abdullah Bin Wahab Bin Muslim Al-Fahri (197 Hijri).

This study will investigate the book of “Al-Jami’ Fi Al-Hadith” in detail and all of its components that have been scattered across various libraries. It also aims to initiate a movement that focuses on the exploration and preservation of the Hadith heritage, which has been kept within many and different types of manuscripts, made of papyrus. Hopefully, this work will also open the doors to new findings in this field of study and becomes its corner stone.

In addition to the novelty of this topic, its importance lies in the rarity of these ancient Hadith scripts. Our method of writing will be in the form of descriptive analysis augmented by relevant pictorial illustrations and documentations
